Laser Eye Surgery: Lasik vs. Lasek

The differences between Lasik vs Lasek can sometimes be confusing to figure out which is a better procedure. To me it comes down to safety. So, which IS the safest procedure? I went to a few of the local clinics offering Lasik vs Lasek. It seemed as though both had their pros and cons...

With Lasik, the procedure heal time was about 1-2 days. It seemed quick and was presented from all clinics as safe and effective with the convenience of being back to work the next day. I did some digging and found that it had some draw backs. There is a cut, either by blade or laser that creates the flap in the cornea. This essentially is disrupting the integrity of the cornea and has risks associated to it. The more I read into the risks, the more I quickly stepped away from Lasik.

On to Lasek... The first thing that struck me was that the flap that concerned me was no longer an issue. Lasek surgery is cut free. There is no flap that is being cut into the cornea. When I read about the risks that cutting into the cornea creates, I knew this procedure wasn’t for me. The surgeon works on the surface of the eye which leaves the integrity of the cornea intact. Heal time is a little more, about 4-7 days but I would definitely prefer a longer heal time with a procedure that is safer! Needless to say, I have found my clinic and have decided to proceed with the Lasek surgery.
